Zettai Kareshi – 01

After first hearing that Zettai Kareshi was going to be made into a drama, I went into fangirl overdrive mode and hurriedly dug up the manga and reread it twice patiently(impatiently) awaiting for the first ep to come out.

A tip to fans of the manga, don’t expect it to be like the manga.

I was thoroughly disappointed.

The only thing that I could sense in common with the manga was the fact that the robot name is night and the guy is a robot. Everything else was differently.

Alright, lets go character by character.

The setting

It is not in high school but at a work place.
I found it alright, if they wanna change the location, it is fine, just as long as they remain pretty much true to the storyline.
Was it true to the storyline?
The means by which Riko manage to obtain the robot was different to begin with.
And after that, nothing was the same.

Riko Izawa

Okay, as far as things related to her go, they are pretty much the.
The first ep focus largely on her crush on a senpai, which did occur in the first vol of the manga. The difference is that they decided to make that thing into a whole episode.
But that plays pretty well into the story so I found it acceptable.

Night Tenjo

I just have to say it, why is the dude so tanned?!?He looks like he was coated in butter and roasted under the sun at 300degrees for 45 minutes cook to perfection with a soft outside and a hard inside (wait, wasn’t it suppose to be the other way around?)If you are looking for charisma, or charm, just like the Night in the manga, this one lacks it.While he may be good looking and all, he is so much of a robot in his actions and his smile and his everything.I know that that is the way it is suppose to be since he is a robot, but the portrayal of a robot was so obvious that it was plain typical stereotyping.I don’t see how technology can advance by so much yet the robot remains as dull as ever. And that smile! Did a bug crawl up his butt? lol, it look so fake. Every single time.
Other than that, the directors made it a point to show the robotic insides of Night.
Okay, so sure, they wanted to remind us that he is a robot.
I get that, but by the third of fourth time of seeing his naked metal bones I was pretty much on the verge or giving up on watching the drama.
It is almost like they want people to know VERY VERY certainly that it is a romance between a ROBOT and a girl.
And not a robot(that is like a human) and a girl.
No, a metal ROBOT and a girl.

Okay, now onto the next issue.

Soshi Asamoto

The guy does not even know Riko.
I was so looking forward to the hot best friend love triangle situation.
But nope, aint happening. Why?
Because the guy knows about as much as Riko as we do. Heck, we probably know a lot more after reading the manga 😉
So it is going to be a plain work romance love story between Riko and Soshi.
Between Night and Soshi, I think that the actor for Soshi is hotter.
But. BUT. BUT. Soshi’s personality is not the serious studious person that we know.
Nope, he is a big time play boy with cash.

The only thing that remains the same and true to the storyline is probably the best friend who is a bitch.
Yes, she still is one.

Okay, so with all the changes that they have made, I wonder why it is even called Zettai Kareshi.

Would I watch the next ep?
While i went on and on about how horrible it was, it was not that bad actually.
My advice is to ignore the manga and just watch this as a stand alone piece.
It might serve to be some good entertainment for the Spring of 2008.

-ra out!

  1. Hi there,
Did you watch it with english subs? I’m currently looking for this series.. Im disappointed though that you said it’s not the same as the manga ~~ I love the manga.

  2. nope. the version that i saw was the RAW. The subs should be out soon i guess. I know that SARS fansub is planning on taking it on as a project. Their subs are pretty good. As of yet they have not release the first ep.

I liked the manga too, it just sucked that they changeed it.

  3. I’ve watched it last 2 days with subs,,, Its out on youtube already!=)

  4. Apparently from what i heard, the one that came out a few days ago had quite a few mistakes in their fansubbing.
SARS-fansub just release the first ep. You might wanna check out their version instead. ^-^v

  5. I was disappointed when I have watched the 1st episode of this jdorama it’s really different from the manga… I really love and adore the manga.. still I like to watch the jdorama because i love hayami mokomichi ^ ^

offtopic: can we be affliates/exchange links? thank you ^ ^

  6. I enjoyed it, though I was slightly disappointed. My biggest disappointment was the portrayal (though not the hotness) of Soshi. I feel the older brother (vice president) was more like Soshi in the manga than the playboy little brother. I was also disappointed to see that Soshi was not Rika’s life long neighbor who looked out for her like a little sister.

  7. yea!! i thought that the vice president was more like soshi.
and yup, the character of soshi was probably the most dissapointing thing/change. I did not like the way they did that. I wish they had sticked to the original characters instead of changing them so much.

  8. i so agree about leaving the characters the same. i think the entire point of Soshi being so uptight at the beginning is so that we can see him unwind and loosen up. plus he was so hot in those glasses lol.

as for the change in scenery, i can understand how it may seem inappropriate for a teenage girl to live alone with a man. so i have no real problem with the switch from high school to office building. although the school setting was fun… maybe i would have placed it in a college setting instead.

  9. yea, totally.
i just saw the recent ep and i have to say that i cant stand the vice prez.
at first i thought he was cool and pretty much like what soshi should be like, but then he is an ass so i am glad that at least Soshi character (though a playboy) is still likable.

But anyway, they want to make this series their own and i cant blame them. Afterall, after changing the enviroment and stuff, might as well make it their own (characters and all)
Am i the only one who can’t stand Night? (i find him too plastic and i can’t see how he is suppose to be sweet and all. I find it all pretty much fake. =_=)

im actually reading the manga right now and i feel that there is so much more in the manga than actually watching just the jdorama. i agree that they changed so much out of all the characters portrayed in the drama. well the only reason im watching the jdorama is because of Hiro Mizushima. but i hope in the end everything will eventually fall into place and the drama will be greatly understood. so far so good and im liking the chemistry between soshi and riiko. that half filipino/japanese guy is just super tanned that its hard to stare at him and not think “ewww”. lol

  11. that guy is half fillipino? i did not know that. but i agree, his tan is horrible. I have no idea what was in the casting team’s mind when they casted him.
I wonder if one of the requirements Riko placed down in her perfect boyfriend was that he must be dark. it is just weird for a robot to be that dark.

  12. i just finished watching the whole series and it’s not really as bad. though it is quiet different from the manga, the story and the plot really went up to the very last episode. i can say that they really did a good job in making the live action. your blog is interesting. keep it up!

  13. sorry… i mean the story and the plot is really good up to the very last episode. i kinda mixed up the words.. 🙂

  14. Hayami (who plays Night) is tan because he’s only half Japanese, not quite sure about the other half. But if you search the web what comes up is Filipino.
