Fate/Zero – 05 Review

Episode 05The Vicious Beast Roars

This was a awesome episode!!

The whole cast have gathered and things are definitely heating up!

Episode Summary

Having been interrupted by Rider, the battle between Saber and Lancer comes to a halt. Archibald makes himself known and taunts Waver for being weak and stealing his relic. Rider supports Waver and essentially tells Archibald that he is not good enough to be his Master.

Archer and Berserk then make their appearance and a battle between Archer and Berserk ensues.

Before the battle gets out of hand, Tokiomi summons Archer back and stops the fight. Berserk then continues on to attack Saber and Lancer comes to her rescue. Archibald then forces Lancer to attack Saber and Rider comes to her rescue. (Geez, Saber is starting to seem like the weakest of them all)

The episode ends with everyone parting ways and Saber still cursed by Lancer.

Review

Now this is what I call an action episode. Unlike last week’s constant rambling, this week had an awesome balance of action and dialogue.

So where do I start?

The fact that the whole cast have finally gathered together in one episode is exciting my blood, I can’t wait to see the next fighting scene that will take place in this series.

Archer VS Berserker

That fight scene was the scene that I have been waiting for since the start of the season. Nice animation, tension is running high and the way the fight had played out was so fun to watch. After all, no battle scene is dull when Archer is involved. I just love his holier-than-thou attitude, it always makes it so fun to watch him pimp everything up.

My question about the Matou Berserker pair was whether anyone else felt that Matou’s personality had changed and is slightly more twisted? It is understandable that he wants to win the war to save Sakura, but the whole “psyched about the war” attitude felt really odd for me. The statement that Kiritsugu (I think it was Kiritsugu) had made about how no sane Master would send their Servant out amidst this mess had red flags popping up in my mind signalling that Matou has lost it. Whatever the case, I can’t wait to see more.

Berserker was also really cool, he reminded me of a psychotic dark knight, I am really curious to see who he is meant to be but shall refrain from spoiling myself. =D

As for the Archer and Tokiomi pair, I am sad that Tokiomi had used up 1 of his command to force Archer to retreat. T^T I wanted to see more of Archer Noble Phantasm.

Rider vs Lancer

There is just no getting enough of Rider and Waver. This episode had actually showed us the bond between Rider and Waver, and that despite how much they argue, they are actually loyal to one another. It was so fun to watch Rider burning Archibald with his words, I am really starting to hate the snake-like attitude of Archibald and am glad that his “command” for Lancer to attack Saber was wasted because of Rider stepping in to stop the battle. That whole scene was so heartbreaking to see, Lancer had was really struggling against himself to fight Saber. Thank god for Rider and his impeccable timing, his appearance was like a message of “hey! don’t forget that I am still here” for me. =D

P.S: Can I say that Rider actually really looks quite similar a monkey on a horse? =P

The Saber Gang

Okay, I know that this group is meant to be the “main”group of the show. However, with a master like Kiritsugu, I am unsure who I dislike more, Archibald or him.

I can’t believe that he was going to sniper Archibald. That is cheating! Bloody hell! At least if it were some sort of magic bullet I wouldn’t mind. Right now, I am so confused as to what sort of character Kiritsugu is meant to be. Are we meant to like him or dislike him? Or is he suppose to be an interpretation of the “modern man” in a war between different ages?

Then we have Irisviel, am I the only one who found her existence to be forgettable? She had so little merit in the episode that I would have forgotten her presence at the battle if not for Saber constantly trying to protect her.

As for Saber, I think that everyone already knows who she is, what with Rider shouting it out for the whole world to hear. If that were the case, why is she still using the wind to hide her sword?

Overall, their presence was the weakest out of all the pairs in this episode.

Caster and Ryunosuke

Finally! Do I hear others rejoicing with me?

Although the screen time that they had in this episode was pretty limited and short, they still never failed to entertain me.

Ryunosuke’s excitement basically mirrored mine (minus his sadistic nature) and I can’t wait to see how a fight with this pair in the Holy Grail War will turn out to be like.

I sort of pitied Saber though, she seemed to have gotten herself a stalker by the name of Caster. =D His face filled with tears had really cracked me up.

Overall

This was a really fun episode to watch, although the first part did get a tad messy with how quick everything happened, the pacing of the show was better than last episode’s all dialogue no action style. The fact that this is also the first time we get to see everyone on screen in one episode has really got me riled up to see even more! To add to that, the Soundtrack of this series just pumps everything up to the next level. =D

Episode Rating: 8.5/10 – was so fun to watch! hopefully HxH and Ben-To would be able to continue this mood.

How do the servants rank on your list of favourites?

Right now, Lancer is at the top of my list for Favourite Servants, his character is just so endearing. Tied for the Number 2 spot would be Archer (cos his whole attitude always cracks me up) and Caster (The pyscho is funny). Followed by that would be Rider. =D The rest would probably be ranked like this – Saber, Berserker, Assassin (true to his nature, he is an enigma).

  1. My favorite is the Berserker. (Doubtless due to the greatest anime adaptation of all time)

Some are complaining that the plot didn’t advance in this episode, cuz nobody died, but hey, I suspect that there are plenty of episodes left and I feel that the true key to the pace is the number of the seals each master uses. That alone ratchets up the tension beyond the hack-n-slash level of action. So far so good!

  2. “Some are complaining that the plot didn’t advance in this episode, cuz nobody died”

I don’t see this show as being a constant 1 on 1 thing and someone will die. I think this was the first episode where everyone gathered and now the war starts.

“I feel that the true key to the pace is the number of the seals each master uses.”

Quite true, seeing as to how some of them are pretty quick to use their seals, I think you might be right. The only thing with the seal thing is that you would assume that instead of commanding, they should have found a diff way. =/

    “My favorite is the Berserker.”

Lol, He is like this mess of mad darkness. =D Can’t wait to see more of him.

    • Yeah, apparently the force of Street Fighter trope is too strong within the anime community. Facepalm.

As for the masters, could you blame them when they have to make a quick decision in the heat of the moment? Its very much similar to a football coach’s decision to go for it on fourth down. The rest of us are Monday morning quarterbacks second-guessing that decision.

Quite true. Then I guess the thing comes down to the best kind of servant is the one who is similar to the master -> Which only leaves Saber and Caster’s Masters.

As for the whole Street Fighter thing, if people want that sort of show, they are better off watching Street Fighter instead =D =P

  3. Just like how a swordsman has a pride in his sword, a magus should have pride in his magic. A magus should only kill his opponent by using his magic. But Kiritsugu lacks that, he is just a killer doll, he is not worthy to be the protagonist. >_>
This is one of the few anime that doesn’t have a protagonist, lol.

Perhaps Saber is the protagonist? Well, this show does not need a protagonist since it has such a strong cast of characters.

And the more Matou looses it, the more I love him!

Aaaand RIDER WAS FUCKING ADORABLE! Moe even! ❤

  5. My favorite would be Lancer, for sure. I just love his attitude and fighting style.

Second to that it’s definitely Iskander, followed by Saber, Berserker, and archer.

  6. The plot didn’t go anywhere but the awesomeness of the fighting made up for it. Berserker metaphorically bitch slapping Gilgamesh by using his own weapons to deflect his noble phantasm made me squee. I was half expecting some black shades to fall from the sky onto his visor and the caption “DEAL WITH IT” to appear. Moar Kariya + Berserker please!

Rider continues to be awesome this episode and even Tokiomi was like “The hammy-ness… it’s too much. Pull out Archer!”. I especially liked how he used his steed to trample Berserker. Contrary to the title, Rider from FSN did very little riding.

They already showcased the talents of several of the servants so I hope they start going into characterization of the masters and servants, and the more personal conflicts between different masters. So far there is a rivalry set up between Tokiomi and Kariya, Kiritsugu and Kotomine and Waver and Kenneth. Pkus Caster apparently has a hard on for Saber 😛

  7. Plot advancement doesn’t really matter. Even if I don’t read the light novel, I have known most of the outcome from playing all three routes of Fate Stay Night. The super cool fighting is what we are looking for.
The design of Berserker and his fighting style is way too awesome!
I hate womanizer, so Lancer would rank much lower.

No…… T^T Think of it this way, he is a bad boy that is waiting to be reformed? =P At least he seems like a decent character.

  8. To answer some of the questions of Saranaufogus about Kariya, I think the personality change is based on several of his core values that were alluded to in earlier episodes. His cackling about Berserker being such a Boss is likely an expression of an inferiority complex developed from being the least adept master of the cast. While everyone else was training for who knows how long for the war, he was just an average guy who went through training from hell over the course of a year to save someone he loves. For a nobody like Kariya to stand up to the likes of blue-bloods and godlike heroes, it must feel good to have the competition take you seriously. He sneers at Tokiomi because he is the man who so casually threw Sakura to the wolves (ahem, ‘penis worms’) and the very reason Kariya is fighting.

Kiritsugu comments that he would have to be insane to send out his servant like that and he is getting noticeably unhinged. Kariya was dying from his crest worms even before he took on Berserker, a servant who is noted to take a shit ton of effort to control just so it doesn’t turn on you. It’s clear to me that his physical health is quickly declining, with his mental health not far behind.

Poor, poor Kariya. He is filled with rage and sadness as his body and mind slowly tear themselves apart. Kariya is probably the most sympathetic out of all the cast. Someone give that man a hug, and give Berserker a bro fist!

    Like

    • You explanation does make sense about why Kariya would act that way. I do pity Kariya but his character is quite disturbing, at least more so than Caster or Ryunosuke’s. At least with those 2 you know that they are sociopaths, Kariya’s breakdown is just plain creepy, especially w those weird worms in him. o_O

As for giving Berserker a fist, he will rip your arm off and turn it into his noble phantasm =P

      • I think I like Kariya as much as I do because he reminds me of Wander from Shadow of the Colossus, one of my favorite games. Wander, who can’t even use his sword very well, sets off to revive someone he loves by fighting 16 nigh invulnerable Colossi. From the outset his task was impossible but he strove on to the very end with sheer determination, as his body became more corrupted. Even when Dormin, the spirit who promised to bring his loved one back to life in exchange for defeating the Colossi, warned him that there may be a high price to pay for what Wander was doing, he simply responded that it didn’t matter.

In the same vein as Wander, Kariya sealed his fate for the chance to change somebody else’s.That kind of selflessness is really heartwarming and cranks up the sympathy factor. His decent into madness regardless, looking at what the other masters are fighting for, its easy to see Kariya as one of the few good characters.

Kotomine: Doesn’t actually have any goal.
        Tokiomi: UNLIMITED POWER!!!
        Kenneth: MOAR UNLIMITED POWER!!!
        Ryunosuke: For the Evuls
        Waver: I wish people wouldn’t think I’m such a whiny loser… *pout*
Kiritsugu: Wants to save the world (How? From what? Who knows!)

Also, if Berserker uses my own arm as a noble phantasm to slap the people I don’t like in the show, then it was a worthy sacrifice. XD

LOL. Honestly, Is it really worth it? =P I mean, you could always just pay Kiritsugu to sniper them off and then shoot himself after he is done. =P

“Kiritsugu: Wants to save the world (How? From what? Who knows!)”

It is a tad annoying that they have yet to explain that detail, but I guess it will all be explained in due time. Just as long as it does not become a forgotten fact, I am fine with it taking its time.

  9. This episode was incredible. The motion of Berserker catching Gilgamesh’s first weapon is now forever etched in my memory as one of the favorite fight scene moments. Fanboy aside, agreed on Saber… weakest of the lot. Agreed on Rider… the most fun of the lot. Favorite remains Gilgamesh – he threw weapons at a servant for looking at him the wrong way – now THAT is a historical king for you. And I’ve loved Caster since the first appearance. “Some forms of lost hope are more delicious than others.” – told me all I needed to know about him 🙂 Hoping this one goes 24 eps although I know its only 13 😦
