Fate/Zero – 06 Review

Episode 6 – Night of Schemes

Good Morning Everyone! (or afternoon or night) =P

This episode essentially focuses on the exploration of Kirei’s character and gives us some direction as to how the battles might be spit up in this series.

In contrast to last episode’s high action and adrenaline pumping atmosphere, this episode takes the dialogue heavy approach and focuses on character and plot development.

Review

Ever since the start of the series, it was never made clear how the battles might have played out and who would end up fighting against whom. However, this episode has made it quite clear as to how things will most likely work for now.

  • Kiritsugu –> Archibald
  • Caster –> Saber
  • Tokiomi & Kirei –> Caster
  • Rider (?)
  • Mato (?)

After the situation in this episode, we could assume that Archibald is dead and take him out of the equation, but I doubt he is really gone.

Who needs Magic?

This statement by Kiritsugu summed up the way of things in this episode:

“A free-fall from 150 meters… No magical barrier could have saved him from that”

I am no longer sure if this series is meant to be about the Mages or about technology. =P This episode was essentially a battle amongst humans with even Kerei participating in this theme. Guns, Bombs, Cars, Knives, we have everything, but where’s the magic that is meant to take place?

It is just a code not a rule of the war right?

The start of the episode had showed us Irisveil’s maniacal driving skills and I was so certain that magic is not the scariest thing in this series, technology is. If she had crashed the car both of them would probably be dead and that would be the end of the whole battle (unless Saber can fly). On a different note regarding Saber, was I the only one who was a tad annoyed by her sense of honor when she had stated her name so casually in the battle? I know it is only fair to state your name when your opponent has done the same thing, but since names hold a significant importance in this series, isn’t it a tad naive to be doing so since this is a war after all? Oh well, I guess this incident does portray her “pure” character trait.

Then we have the situation with Archibald. Because of the amount of time spent on introducing a new character as well as the relationship between them, I am pretty sure that Archibald and Lancer are still alive and kicking since we have not seen any proof to tell us otherwise. Although, I am glad for them to be alive, I would much rather have some plot progression with at least one of the characters dying off as I am getting tired of this immortality style of battle. Every time we think someone is dead, they come back alive and we realize that it was all a scheme (that would justify the epiosde title). That would be acceptable if the show were to span over 2 seasons, but this is not the case for this series and we are halfway through the season with little progression on that front. (Seems, like the series has a second season that will be out in April 2012)  Another thing with the scene with Archibald was that it had essentially eluded to the fact that outside forces and partners might be the key to gaining the upper hand in this Holy Grail War. (Then again, Kiritsugu could just nuke the whole place and win)

The worse thing about the bombing fiasco is the fact that bombs were actually used. What is wrong with Kiritsugu? It is starting to look more like a normal war instead of a mage war and I feel a tad cheated by this fact. I am not sure who I hate more, Kiritusgu’s constant distance from the actual battle or Achibald’s cowardice.

The Psychos

Damn, I really loved that Caster had kicked started off the episode. This is definitely the season for psychotic characters since they definitely know how to entertain and they have a way of making the scenes feel highly refreshing to watch. =D

Although the scene between Caster and Saber was short lived, I am glad that Caster is finally getting some prominence in this series. I am sure we would be seeing more of him soon since he has finally decided to take action and Kirei and Tokiomi would also be going after this pair of psychos.

I did wonder about one thing during the scene about Jean – how much of what Caster was saying as insanity and how much of it was the truth? Does Saber really look like this Jean person of whom he speaks of, or is it all Caster’s twisted mind at work? It would be fun to see them explore that fact a bit more.

Stirring Things Up

Before I get to talking about Archer’s meddling, Archer seriously needs to consider keeping his hair styled 24/7. He looked oddly normal and boring with his hair down and his attitude does not shine through as much without all the pompous accessories that he usually dons.

Now back to the meddling.

Did you guys find this part to be quite suggestive in a sexual manner? I thought that the framing was a bit odd especially when you couple it with the dialogue for that scene.

Archer has finally stirred things up between Kirei and Tokiomi and this might be the start of a huge fall out. Kirei’s objectives in this series has always been a mystery and now we know that he genuinely hasn’t a clue as to why he is even part of the war. Perhaps with Kirei finally finding the motivation to obtain what he wants, he would no longer act as a puppet controlled by Tokiomi and might do things his own way.

The fact that Kirei is obsessed with Kiritsugu was also reiterated in that scene through the way Kirei had singled Kiritsugu out whilst thinking about everyone’s motive.

Where’s my Rider?

Although this episode wasn’t terrible, it was definitely missing the Rider/Waver comedy.

This episode just proved to me that without Rider in the picture, things can get a tad flat and boring to watch. Hopefully Rider will be back together with Berserker in the next episode.

Episode Rating: 7/10

Overall, things are finally shaping up in this episode, and perhaps from here on out the episodes would start to place a bigger focus on the battles between the servants. I can’t wait to see more interaction between the servants.

P.S: What was with Tokiomi’s Archibald’s obsession with Lancer’s mole? He kept staring at it during that scene in the hotel. Was he upset that Lancer’s playboy tendencies suggests that Lancer might have a soft heart and thus would be unable to follow through with his actions of killing Saber?

You mean Kayneth. He is probably jealous seeing how his fiancee is charmed by Lancer’s mole. Expect NTR soon.

Um, This IS only the first season. There will be a second season of 12 episodes in April 2012.
So now we are only in the first quarter of the whole story, not halfway.

Just went and check it out, thanks for the note on that. Well, then if that is the case then the point I made in that part is null =)

It is a cursed spot. Any female who looks his spot will be charmed by Lancer. Archibald was afraid that his fiancee might fall for his servant.

  4. I think you are all misinterpreting that focus on Lancer’s face. The way I took that scene was that Kayneth was frustrated and trying to figure out his servant so he was looking at his face (the eyes are the window to the soul and all that). Lancer seems genuinely loyal and honor bound to his master but it was that same honor that prevented him from quickly dispatching saber. Kayneth doesn’t appreciate the conflict of interests.

The transition from the dockside battle to Irisviel’s crazy driving was both awkward in terms of sequential events as well as the tone of the story. Episode 5 ended with the set up for Kirei vs Kiritsugu, Caster vs Saber and Irisviel and Saber concluding that from now on things are going to be serious business. Come episode 6 and there is a light hearted scene where Irisveil proves women can’t drive (only joking of course :P) I wasn’t even sure how/why they were speeding down the road having the time of their life when the last time I saw them they were at the docks talking ominously. The scene also had a bit of bad animation after Saber chased off Caster, she appeared to be walking in place for several seconds. Seriously, is there any difference in depth when she moves towards the car?

I liked the scene with Kayneth because it started to add some characterization beyond him being a snobbish blue blood that all viewers should dislike. His behavior seems to suggest he is not completely confident with himself after his female companion chastises him, as well as his ability to win the war after his servant failed him and he wasted a command spell. His almost angry boasting about how awesome his security was said to me that he had something to prove. I think these character traits are confirmed by his reaction to Rider’s taunts and ultimatum in episode 5.

Kirei’s character development was meaningful but handled pretty slowly. For a guy who rarely deigns to converse with anyone, Gilgamesh was pretty chatty. I think their exchange would have worked better if they more quickly transitioned into the important questions that will define Kotomine, namely what is Kotomine’s purpose in the war and what joy means to him (i.e. how he gets fulfillment). That said, this series is probably better suited for people who don’t know anything about the franchise. I can extrapolate a lot of information and faster because I already have a vague idea of how it ends from playing FSN.

I’d give this episode a 6 overall. The pacing was slow at times and I am getting a little impatient with the conflict between servants ending abruptly because one combatant simply left (everyone at the end of episode 5, Caster fleeing from Saber and Maya fleeing from Kotomine) or Kiritsugu who never even showed up for the battle. The focus on Kiritsugu’s (cheap) tactics over Saber’s fighting prowess makes one forget this war is allegedly a mage battle. It’s somewhat disappointing.

  5. Regarding Caster mistook Arthuria for Jean here is the real Jean:

And the “I wasn’t even sure how/why they were speeding down the road having the time of their life when the last time I saw them they were at the docks talking ominously.”
They are going to the Einzbern Castle in the Forest. The next 2-3 episodes & battles will take place there.

Ren: Remember that beside Kiritsugu (who is still a mage) the other masters except Kirei are pure mages so you will have your Mage battle soon 🙂 in episode 8-9 I think.

    • I’ll have to take your word for it then. FSN was notorious for very few of the masters actually being mages so I hope they show the difference in Fate/Zero.

One major difference between the two works is that FSN actually cared about hiding the servants identity with only one master, Ilia who just wanted to brag about it, stating outright who their servant was. This information was even a secret to the viewer with servants like Assassin and Rider not being revealed until the 3rd ark. In Zero everyone is quick to announce themselves despite this being a more serious and cutthroat war. It’s not consistent with Saber’s character to reveal her name when in FSN she kept it a secret to everyone she met including her master until later events. Even within Zero, Saber’s attitude could be seen as contradictory, with her pragmatically saying she would quickly eliminate those she fought but at the same time knowingly reveal a weakness by revealing her name.

You are right about it but she does seem to hold the knight’s code at a higher regard over the war itself. And since it was a code of chilvary =/ her inner knight made her do the honorable thing. But that doesn’t make it an any less stupid move to make. =P

I love you for that statement! I thought I was the only one XD

As for your complains on Kiritsugu not using magic, I was under the impression that the show made it clear he was chosen by the Einzbern family especially because he specialized in killing mages without using magic.
I think it’s a smart move, in a mage battle, who would expect someone not to use magic?
(Except they’re all pretty aware of him but well XD)

Aaand last but not least about Caster and his historical background, I’m French and an history major and he happens to be French too so …
Anyway, Gilles de Rais is a knight and has quite his fair share of nobilty titles, he’s notorious for being very interested in magic and alchemy, also notorious for having been burnt to death after being convicted of sorcery, sodomy and murder of 30 little children.
He’s also notorious for being the brother in arms of Joan of Arc, the Jeanne he speaks of, lots of speculations have been made about their relationship and he had to witness her death after she’s been convicted of sorcery and burnt as well.
Hence his presence there and his obsession for Saber since Jeanne was a knight and a woman as well.

    (I talked too much right?)

I know that he killed mages without using magic but he is Saber’s master after all. =/ She has magic that she could use, plus she needs to find Lancer and defeat him anyway.

“I think it’s a smart move, in a mage battle, who would expect someone not to use magic?”

Apparently Kirei, and he also didn’t use any magic, but since he is hiding the fact that the Assasins are alive, I don’t really blame him for not using his servants. I think my choice of word for magic was wrong since it is more about the servants. =P

“burnt to death after being convicted of sorcery, sodomy and murder of 30 little children.”

He seems to be raking up a tad more deaths at a quicker pace in this series as compared to history. Is his character a fictional one or real? You did say French History. (I know I should just google it but I would rather hear your humanised explanation of the situation. aka, cliffnotes version =) Doesn’t my question prove that you don’t talk too much?)

  7. Kiritsugu doesn’t have the honor of a Mage, he always uses technology that no other Mage would consider, that’s why he’s known as the Mage Killer. Note the first ep when kirei and tokiomi were using that crystal kiritsugu was using a laptop and printer.

  8. Did you see Kayneth’s wife turning girly girl and the shot of her smiling at Lancer after apologizing? This comes right before Kayneth staring at the mole and cursing it (in his mind).

  9. I finally watched the actual episode. Kayneth stared at Lancer’s mole after her wife acted girly and spoke on Lancer’s behalf. He must have thought that his wife were affected, and worried over it.
I wonder how they survive, though. After the whole building got blown up from the basement until the top floor in a VERY short interval. There won’t be enough time for Lancer to carry them and jump to the neighbouring building?
I restrained myself as much as possible not to look for spoilers, but those those three definitely still alive.

Side note : I wonder how many hair gels that Archer used up whenever he goes into battle mode. 😛

Also, sniperlady (can’t remember her name) did mention that they were still on the building and hadn’t move. An illusion?

Seems like that would be the case. =D

He doesn’t use hair gel, he just puts on a wig when he needs to head out. That is how awesome he is. =P Wig made out of the hair from the Lion’s mane… yup… yup.. I can just picture it. j/k

  10. I really like how well done they animated the body language of the characters. If you pay close attention, you can notice the thoughts and feelings of the characters in the absence of words.

I like Archibald’s as a character. He isn’t as one dimensional as I originally thought. He’s obviously not dead yet, and I’d like to see more of him and his party.

Also, Kiritsugu DOES use magic. Notice how he jedi mind-tricked the safety employee from the hotel into scratching off Kayneth’s name from the list.

Yup, this episode did well in developing his character.

“I really like how well done they animated the body language of the characters. If you pay close attention, you can notice the thoughts and feelings of the characters in the absence of words.”

Silence speaks volumes eh? 😉 I did find the fact that they repeated the whole walking in a circle thing when Archibald’s fiance was talking and pacing. It was funny as it had felt like they couldn’t think of another way to make the scene interesting when someone is talking thus they make them pace. =D Similar to the Tokiomi scene in episode 1.

But I don’t think Kiritsugu is so powerful as a mage, to be able to use Mystic Eyes?
He was just so confident in lying, so the employee believed him.
        🙂
Come to think of it, Saber’s hairstyle is also different when she transformed.
Apparently their abilities aren’t simply ‘armor equip’ but also ‘wig equip’.
