Persona 4: The Animation – 05 – 06 Impressions

Episode 5 and 6
Take A Hand Full of Fluff and Toss It in the Air

These couple of episode have definitely broken away from the repetitive structure of the first 4 episodes with the focus shifting back to the “human” world.

The question that I find myself asking is that whilst the episodes are different, what are they meant to do for the series?

That’s one way to describe Yu =_=”

Impressions

In case you were wondering what happened with last week’s review, I haven’t forgotten about this series so don’t worry. I might not do regular updates on the series but I will try my best to at least continue to blog it as it goes on.

Disclaimer:  I had just marathoned this couple of episodes so my view on the individual episodes might be a tad affected by the lack of lag time.

These couple of episodes were a bit different and filled with character building scenes than actual plot progression material so I am not sure if I would have as much to talk about as usual. One thing to mention is that the background music no longer stands out like a sore thumb and that is always a good thing for this series.

Episode 5

This episode was pretty fluffy and I don’t really get the point of it from an anime perspective. However, if I saw it as a game then it makes sense as a character/personality building episode.

Yu finally gets to integrate himself into school life and makes new friends in this episode whilst aiding others along the way. It is nice to see that he is starting to form a slightly more talkative personality but he still suffers from the poster dumbfounded look whenever he is unsure of what to do. Sadly, his character flaws and lack of personality becomes apparent since this episode places such a huge focus on him. Under normal circumstances, I would say that the episode would be boring. However, since this series is mainly being carried by the supporting characters instead of the main character at this point, it means that these characters have a slightly more interesting personality than usual. As such, the episode did turn out to be an fun and easy episode to watch.

The lack of plot development in this episode was also very apparent and I am not seeing the point of taking a break from the main story just to introduce the “school life” side of Yu. I personally think that whilst this would have been good in the game, it wouldn’t have made a difference if the episode had simply left it out. Since people are saying that the speed of the shows are fast due to the amount of material that the game provides, I think that wasting an episode is a real pity. This is of course coming from the expectations that Ebihara and Ichijo’s character won’t be playing a huge role in this series. I could be wrong about it and if they do hold some importance then I guess the episode is justified.

As I had said, the episode had build on Yu’s school life, home life, love life and essentially all aspects of his life… The conclusion? Yu leads a pretty boring existence. =P For a such a fluffy episode it didn’t have too many comedic or memorable moments (although not due to lack of trying, just that it had merely not come across as comedic as I think the animators thought it would), but I did manage to get some entertainment out of Yu’s predicament. I just think that the fact that he went along with everything definitely proves that the guy needs to develop a personality at an ever faster rate than this.

Overall, the lack of Persona’s in the episode was a breath of fresh air that was welcomed.

Episode Rating: 6/10

Episode 6

Similar to episode 5, this episode once again takes a break from the Persona’s and is filled with what seems like more fluff.

The difference is that we are finally getting back into the actual mystery and the group is back to playing detectives as a 4 man band instead of 3. It was nice to see how the group dynamics would work and for that reason the episode did manage to achieve something.

The downside of the episode? It didn’t seem to lead to anywhere except for eluding to the fact that the cop might be a suspicious character due to the ominous background music and the look that Yu had gave him. XP Also, the team’s detective and sluthing efforts had held too much of a resemblance to children detective clubs that you see in family movies. Since they are all amateurs, it would have been impossible to expect them to act with professionalism, so I guess they did the best that they could. My gripe with it is that the execution could have been a bit more polished with them not acting so childish and foolish in their approach to the situation. To me, this just reflects the type of characters that are in the show and that doesn’t paint a too impressive sight.

Then we have the character Tatsumi Kanji, I wonder how his character will play into all of this and wonder if they will simply brush his character off. I would assume that this would lead to something bigger since we didn’t get any resolution to the situation and Yu did mention something about continuing their observation on Tatsumi as it might not be a dead end.

I know that I had complained about their little detective club that they had going on, but it was nice to see that something good had come out of it – new information was gathered in this episode with the new conclusion that Yamano is the main connection to all the murders. I can’t wait to see more plot development on that front and I hope it would be soon.

Also, the beef bowl incident in the episode had me chuckling. Sure, it was something that could have been spotted a mile away, but it did it’s job in making me laugh so that’s a plus for me. =)

If I were to take a look at the series thus far, I would have to say that I wish that there were a way to integrate the focus on the outside world with the tv world so that they would balance out. Having too much of a focus on either is starting to seem like an issue as it either turns into a repetitive situation or the show is forced to add “fluff” scenes that don’t really do much for the series’ plot.

Episode Rating: 6.5/10

Overall

It is quite obvious that this series is starting to turn out to be a pretty solid 6 – 6.5 show for a person like me who have not played the game. I still believe that if I were to see it without knowing anything about RPGs or without any prior knowledge of it being a game, I would find these couple of episodes to be odd and out of place. As an anime series the show is definitely very problematic due to the adaptation style, but since it is supposedly targeted at the gaming crowd, I can’t say much about it as I am not the targeted audience anyway. If the aim of the series was not to attract and introduce a new crowd to the game then perhaps everything is justifiable. I honestly feel that the judgement on the show would depend on the main purpose of the series since we would have to see if it has done it’s job on that front. As an anime compared to every other anime? Well, you know my take on it.

After taking into account the source material, I still feel that the last previous episode (ep 5) could have been removed and it wouldn’t have been too much of an issue.

All I am hoping for now is for more plot progress and for things to turn interesting with the plot deepening and becoming more complex. The idea of the cops being part of the situation would definitely be a nice twist if it were true, and the spooky fact of the room having Yamano’s scarf did intrigue me. I am now simply curious as to what that room is really meant to be. (Don’t give me spoilers folks! =P)

Sorry for the late impressions and I hope this short-ish post of the last couple of episodes won’t put you off. =)

As usual, it would be good to hear comments from you guys on what you think of the show or the impression. =P

  1. Yay! Glad to finally see the review!

I agree much more with your reviews now, yes a bit of balance between TV world and real world would be better even from the point of view of someone who has played the game.

Episode 5 basically established 1 important thing which is the forming of bonds which is Yu’s social link, allowing his power in using in certain arcanas to increase and allow him to summon better persona. But as a whole, to a viewer who doesn’t see the point of it is understandable since the game mechanics is unfamiliar to him/her.

I do find the humor in the series now a little fallen short though… But I do know it will pick up soon enough.

I do have one question though… Do you think the plot feels rush? Or feel that stuff are missing? Because I have been watching another reviewer who had a lot of gripe on the pacing and thought that this episode was so rushed as it passed 18 days in just one episode (Episode 6) Which makes me kind of disappointed in that view since important events don’t exactly happen every day =/.

Just want to know how you feel about this, because to me, the pacing is expected not only because the game is long and needs to be squeezed in. It’s also for the fact that the first few cases were very close to each other so it feels rushed if you are just merely watching the scenes.

Yes! So sorry for the wait… am doing too many reviews m(_ _”)m

“I do find the humor in the series now a little fallen short though… But I do know it will pick up soon enough.”

I hope so too. So far the jokes have been relatively mediocre, but at the very least, the jokes are getting better with each episode. (Seems like Yu’s personality wasn’t the only thing the show was developing 😉 )

“I do have one question though… Do you think the plot feels rush? Or feel that stuff are missing? ”

Actually, I did notice the fact that a bunch of days had passed and I did feel that perhaps we might be missing some random school/detective scenes that might help with the character/plot building. But honestly, I think that the pacing was fine and amount of days that had passed is not an issue as long as we don’t feel like we were rushed whilst watching the show or missing any important information. Also, since the episode wasn’t an information dump, one shouldn’t feel like too much is happening in such a short span. Also, the series has settled into an episodic-style with an on-going storyline so I had expected everything to have been wrapped up by the end of the episode. It is actually quite interesting how there is a “goal” for every episode.

Then again, perhaps I am merely used to the pacing of this series. =)

      • Hmm, okay that’s cool then. Interesting to hear another person’s perspective on this.

Come to think of it, yea, it seems like there’s always a ‘goal’ to an episode, which would probably mean the next episode will wrap up this next victim arc soon as well.

Funny thing about the childlike detective investigation going on, they’re just like that due to them being a bunch of inexperienced high school kids, which thus leads up to some of their future slips as well.

*Possible SPOILER don’t read if you don’t want to* There would be some professional help in the future though.

  2. I like episode 6 more than episode 5 I suppose. I like the beef bowl delivery scene too. And I have to agree with you that the investigation technique of the four is childlike.

To be honest, with six episodes in I’m still not quite sure what Persona 4 is about. I have never play the game but I don’t think that makes any difference?

Lol, I am also not 100% sure about what the show’s main focus is but i assume it is merely the group of people looking for the “evil being” (that has control of a persona) and has been transporting the people between the worlds and killing them off. =/
That is how the show seems to be developing for me but since the focus is quite scattered, it is hard to say. I do hope it all comes together soon enough.

  3. The ep. 5 didn’t directly happened in the game, but yeah, they must be showing more social links coz in the game, you can be friends with that basketball manager, the basketball guy, and the soccer dude (not sure) : D

however ep. 6 did happened : 3 luls, except for some scenes.
they are showing yet another hints for social links, like how amagi was conversing with yuu. aside from social links they showed the week of test as well, sure brings back memories. In the game, you will actually answer test exams, and you’ll get extra points if you did well : )

“After taking into account the source material, I still feel that the last episode could have been removed and it wouldn’t have been too much of an issue.”

–not at all. It’ll work for episode 5 but not for episode 6 coz it is definitely a plot development. : D

about Kanji Tatsumi, see the scence AFTER the ed (not the preview) to see how he will affect the plot

annd i don’t think ep 5 could be removed at all, although it pretty much a filler ep but yuu gain 2 new arcana after it, 2 arcana mean 2 new persona and those 2 may save the day somehow in later ep 😀

No no no, I will review it, I will let you know if I drop the series. Hopefully it won’t come down to that. I had fun reviewing 2 eps at a time though. =P

Well, you are right about that part. Was that (the 2 arcana and the 2 new bonds) part of the game as well or something crucial in the game? =P If it is going to be a spoiler you can refuse to answer me. =P

plot wise ,in the game there are just 8 arcana that automatically come to you as you going through the story: The Magician, The Chariot, The Priestess, The Star, The Empress, The Lovers, Justice and Judgement. the other 14 arcana are just some subplot that have nothing to do with the mainplot and can be completely ignored without any change in the story
gameplay wise, if you ignore the other arcana, you will lost the chance to get some strongest arcana in the game and make it much harder (izanagi become too weak to the enemy in the game after shadow chie), in ep 5, yuu get the moon ( Ai Ebihara – club manager) and Strength (Kou Ichijo – basketball player), both have some strongest physical defense persona and i think the anime chose them because the next shadow gonna use heavy physical attack on Yuu.

but i think the anime gonna have all 21 arcana since in the ed we have 21 card floating around and i think they want Yuu to complete the fool journey

and an off-topic question: Will you play persona game? 😛 if you do i recommend start with persona 3 since it have better, deeper story and a cool, handsome main char 😛

and you know, P3 character Shoot themselves in the head to summon persona, watch this, it in the very start of the game so i don’t think it is a spoiler

Well, I am actually going to order the new Assassin’s Creed game when my debit card arrives, hopefully in a week or so. =_=” Love playing that game, though it does get a tad repetitive.

What platforms is Persona 3 on currently? As for handsome main char, well, that’s a good start. Lol.

  5. “What platforms is Persona 3 on currently?”
It on PS2 and PSP, but i recommend you to get the Ps2 verson if it possible. because PSP is weaker and have smaller disc than PS2, the PSP version of the game cutted all anime cutscene, some 3d part of the ps2 ver got turned into 2d and the graphic got degraded. the only better thing in the PSP version is you can chose the main character’s gender, but the only thing change if you chose the female main char that you can date with more men , the story stay the same with a few change in dialog and event to fit a girl

if you don’t have a Ps2, you can still play it on a PC using a Ps2 emulator(Pcsx2) but your computer must at least be able to play assassin creed 1 in order play Persona 3 on PC, if you like, i can show you how to use the Ps2 emulator

you can also play it on a Ps3 that have backward compatibility

and about Persona 3, it a turn based RPG mix with dating sim gameplay (the dating sim gameplay kind of like eroge game minus H scence, and they can make your persona stronger), it a very anime themed game (art, character, story, etc…)

“As for handsome main char, well, that’s a good start. Lol.”

you can see some of his pic here

and the female main char of the PSP version

    • Lol! I was worried that’s be a case.

      I own a PS3 not PS2 and it doesn’t have a backward compatibility. (I didn’t get the first edition of PS3)

I do have a PSP but it is pretty much half destroyed and I am not sure if the UMD is still working but this would be my best shot since…

don’t worry, play P3 won’t spoil anything in P4, it would only make you understand the concept of shadow, persona, tarot and the wild card (multiple persona) power better since they explained it pretty clear in P3 but vaguely in P4 and not explain in P1,P2 at all since they didn’t took persona game seriously until P3, which was their best selling and most popular game since the game company founded, some even said that a P3 anime would have been made if it weren’t because of the “shoot yourself in the head to summon persona” thing, which is resemble sucicide. instead we get a non-canon trinity soul that take place 10 year after P3 but just 2 character from the game appear and the story writer didn’t do homework so they make persona concept completely different from the game’s persona concept

IIRC, Trinity soul: a monster everyone have inside and will protect us if we know it’s existence

all persona game(and P4 anime) :A Persona is a manifestation of a person’s personality, referred to as a “mask” for an individual to use to face hardship, A Persona is similar to a Shadow. Shadows are malevolent manifestations of one’s inner thoughts, while a Persona is a manifestation of the same feelings but tamed.

and IIRC again: Trinity soul have no tarot, which is something very symbolic and have a deep meaning to the story and characters that appear in every persona game

all of the game’s fan call Trinity soul crap because of that, i haven’t tried it yet but i read somewhere that you also think Trinity soul was terrible and drop reviewing it after 2 ep
