Hunter x Hunter 2011 – 07 Review

Episode 07 – Showdown x On x The Airship
(This is so not 3 words =P)

We finally get an episode that places more of a focus on Killua and Hisoka – my two favourite characters of the series. \(^-^)/

Although this episode takes a break from the actually exams, it doesn’t mean that we are not going to get anything substantial out of the episode.

Review

The episode covers episode 11 and 12 of the ’99 series and chapters 13 and 14 of the manga storyline.

This episode is once again back to being true to the manga and delivers a short and sweet format whilst taking a break from the exams. I had felt that the pacing of the episode was also just right, not too fast and not too slow. Nothing really major had happened and all it did was to provide some character development which will come in handy in the future.

This is probably the first time where I had felt that the episode was better than the ’99 series’ version. For those of you who have seen the ’99 series, I am sure you would have noticed that the huge chunk of the story about the female examinee and Kilua’s family was extra material. I hadn’t really liked that segment too much in the ’99 series as it had done nothing more than placed a bigger focus on Killua’s family and his background, which I had felt was pretty unnecessary at this point of the series. Without it we are still able to conclude that his family is family is made out of assassins and that he is one of them and that should be enough.

Character Development

The first thing that the episode starts off with was Netero and his assistant Bean (who is literally as green as a bean and has a head that is the shape of a bean) introducing themselves whilst giving everyone a heads-up about the examinees having a break until 8am (which is when they will be arriving at their destination.)

Tompa had decided to spook Kurapica and Leorio by saying that the next exam could occur on the airship. This whole situation had essentially showed us Kurapica’s analytical mind as he analyses the possibility of that being the truth. As for Leorio, well, he fell asleep, so it isn’t really explained if he was merely too tired to stay awake or if he had also realized that the possibility of an exam happening on the airship was low to worry about. I had liked how this 2011 series prevents Tompa from getting the best out of the main characters, as in the ’99 series I couldn’t help but feel frustrated at how they had always gotten hindered by Tompa’s actions.

Then we have the anlaysis of Hisoka’s character done by the Examiners. I really liked the part where they had discussed about which examinees had caught their attention followed by the shift in the topic towards Hisoka. Seeing his character through the Examiners view point really adds to giving us a better understanding of his character.

As for Gon and Killua, well, Gon’s unfazed attitude towards the truth of Killua’s family really shows his mature and open minded attitude. Either that or it shows his animalistic nature and how he simply goes with his gut. =P I love the focus that was placed on Killua in this episode. The small talk with Gon had given us information about his family, the fight with Netero had showed us his upbringing and his slaughtering of the 2 men showed us his true nature and his evil side. (I had never thought of Killua as being evil prior to this episode)

What was definitely done better in this series was the evil look of Killua. He comes across as being more evil and psychotic than cool. The ’99 series had made him seemed somewhat brainwashed by his family whereas this series makes it seem like it is his true nature to be this evil.

The Missing

Like I had said, the extra bits in the ’99 series were mere fillers and I hadn’t really cared too much for it. That being said, in the ’99 series, I did like the internal turmoil that Killua had gone through right after he had ran out of the match against Netero. That had really showed how Killua had wanted to change and also showed us a softer and more sympathetic side of Killua. However, in the 2011 version and in the manga, all we saw was Killua rushing out so as to prevent himself from slaughtering Netero followed by him killing the 2 guys who had annoyed him at the wrong time. No internal turmoil, just cold blooded murder.

Sure, it can be argued that that is what he is meant to be, but this version of Killua makes him appear more psychotic and definitely harder to sympathize with.

With that being said, both of the murder scenes in the ’99 version and the 2011 version were pretty censored compared to the manga’s version. I actually think that the 2011 version was more uncensored than the 1999 version.

It is quite interesting to see that despite all the censorship with the scenes, the fact remains that this series has a very casual approach to killing someone. People drop dead like flies left, right and center and there isn’t any repercussions shown (at least not as of yet). =_=” It is odd since its 10am time slot does appear to be targeted at children, despite the fact that the content is not a story meant for kids. So my question is why even bother to tone down the gruesome nature of the series and have the show appear to be child friendly in the first place?

The Enjoyable Moments

This episode had a few funny moments:

  • I loved the moment with Killua dreaming about capturing his family the moment he becomes a Hunter. That was a hilarious scene to watch.
  • It was also funny to see Killua attack Netero’s leg but ends up being the injured one instead.
  • Another good moment was with Gon’s creative use of his shoes to attack Netero.
  • I had also liked the use of the assassin’s technique coupled with the explanation given by Netero.

Overall

It was a good episode of Hunter x Hunter and I had enjoyed it. I can’t wait for the series to get back into the exams. For this episode I would have to say that the 2011 version is definitely more towards my liking as compared to the ’99 version.

Hunter x Hunter 2011 Question of The Week:

What do you feel about this more “evil” version of Killua? Are you loving it?

Personally, I missed the cool and brainwashed version of Killua that is constantly having an internal struggle with himself.

  1. So my question is why even bother to tone down the gruesome nature of the series and have the show appear to be child friendly in the first place?

It was a poor marketing move, huh? Considering how this show is doing relatively well with the ratings and all, most of the people watching are in their late teens/twenties NOT kids. I really wish they’d move the timeslot soon.

Anyway, about Killua. I loved the characterization in the 99 series. But I think that’s something that needs to stay in the 99 series. I think a lot of the ‘modifications’ done by Nippon Animation won’t blend well with how the manga progressed. There was also the issue of Killua subconsciously using nen in the series when in fact, Killua never learned nen. He was supposed to in the Heaven’s Arena when he was seven years old but he left before reaching floor 200 and did get a chance to be ‘baptized’. That said, he was a cool Killua, My massive crush for him will never die. I loved that scene with him and Anita, he just smirks at her and it was awesome. So memorable.

Killua is possibly one of the most complex characters in the series and the growth he gets in the manga is phenomenal. This isn’t apparent so early in the series…yet but after reading the latest chapter, it’s amazing how much he’s changes over the course of the series. He has his own internal conflict in the Chimera Ant arc and I think the new arc will definitely mean a lot to him and resolving his issues I like this maladjusted Killua a lot too. he was clearly losing it while trying to grab the ball from Netero. The kid’s a sore loser, a real brat. Hahaha! I also like the obvious fact that he and Gon don’t have a clear grasp of what’s right and wrong.

This adaptation is a bit schizophrenic and it shows. But the characterization is being handled very well, and it should be. The 99’s version, although not truly loyal to the manga had fantastic characterization.

    • I disagree with your idea about the 1999 series’ characterization being better. The Nippon Animation series took a very clear moral stance on characters’ actions. Killua doesn’t kill anyone in the 1999 series because he thinks that Gon would be mad. Here, he does it to blow off steam.

Simultaneously, remember how Hisoka cut off a man’s arms for bumping into him? Killua just killed two people for doing the same thing–one of them didn’t even touch him. You’re supposed to compare the two.

      • Glossa, I believe I didn’t make my point clear enough.

I meant that the characterization in the 99 series was great but it was very different from the manga. And if it had continued to adapt it, Killua’s character would be wishy-washy and difficult to grasp because of how the manga developed him. I never said anything about which was ‘better’. I just said both adaptations are handling the characterization very well which is important to the HxH series. I understand the parallels being drawn between Hisoka and Killua, and the same goes with the parallels between Hisoka and the judge Hunters. I’m actually enjoying this adaptation so far unlike a select few old HxH fans who aren’t. Please don’t misunderstand what I was trying to say. If there’s anything I find working against this series is the fact that they’re marketing it for a younger audience.

Sorry to dissapoint you anonymous. =( Due to how time consuming it is to review shows we had to limit the amount of shows that we choose to review.

Hopefully you will still continue to read the other reviews of series that we have chosen review. =)

  3. I agree. This is a good episode considering the past few episodes that the 2011 series have presented, this is a good one. Let’s start with the pacing, like you i quite enjoyed the pacing for this episode, it was just right and let’s us all hope that it stays that way, because for the last few episodes of the reboot, the pacing has been fluctuating and have never actually got this good so let’s just say it’s a very good improvement. As for Killua, although the 99’s series inserted some fillers through Anita, I kinda like the part where they showed that Killua stopped himself from killing Anita because he’s concerned about what would Gon feel. For me, it gave us a hint of what role will Gon play in Killua’s life. I don’t know i just really love it when they show this Gon-Killua-brotherly relationship. Although you can consider that as fanservice, i guess it showed that Gon is like Killua’s reminder to be sane. But that and like what Mira said, the smile Killua gave to Anita were the only things that I liked with that Anita-filler.

For the 11′ series, I really liked the way how they got into the game with Netero, i’ve never read the manga so that part was really new to me. I also liked how they built up the tension of the game they were playing, especially for the part when Killua and Gon played simultaneously and almost got the ball from Netero. The talk between Gon and Killua about Killua’s family background was cute :)) Although, I really miss the neko-Killua from the 99′ series. There are a few scenes that i missed from the 99’series that were not shown here because maybe ,for they were mere fillers that the 99’series came up with to… i don’t know lengthen the show, for the show was just so good. hahaha. And because this adaptation follows the manga closely, it will never be included in this reboot. The scene where Menchi chased Leorio and Kurapica is the scene that i really would’ve liked to see again.

The one thing that i think will forever bother me, unless it will improve, I’ve said this in your last review and i’ll say it again is the animation. There’s just really something that bothers me and that was carried over to this episode. I hope they do something about that. >_< Although, with my very lengthy comment, it looks like my favor goes to the 99's series, in reality, like you I also like the 11'series version of this part because for me the 99's series version was too slow and the Anita-filler shouldn't have been inserted. It was really unnecessary.

And to answer your question. Well, I've never seen Killua as evil. I see Killua as a cool cute smart brat with an evil counterpart that shows up when you piss him off or lay a finger on Gon. Maybe i still need to see more of this adaptation's version of Killua for me to decide if i'm loving it or not. but as of now, I still find Killua as one of my favorite characters of this series with Hisoka. šŸ™‚

PS: I am not liking the new character design for Mr. Netero's assistant. They took it to literally. @_@ it's just too weird… @_@ And yay for Hisoka's spanish-feel character bgm, it again pops up in this episode. :))

“For the 11ā€² series, I really liked the way how they got into the game with Netero, iā€™ve never read the manga so that part was really new to me.”

The execution of the game scene was definitely better than the ’99 series’ version.

“The one thing that i think will forever bother me, unless it will improve, Iā€™ve said this in your last review and iā€™ll say it again is the animation.”

Well, the animation is probably going to be what it is. It is definitely not fantastic and feels somewhat generic in it’s portrayal of scenes. Perhaps the budget for the series had to be stretched since it is a long running series after all. =/ Either way, it would be nice if the animation were to improve but I wont be holding my breath.

I don’t know, this version is giving off a cold blooded murder vibe which eats at the endearing side of him that I had loved in the ’99 series. =P But then again, he was brought up to be a cold blooded murderer after all so… =/

=D Yes! Yay for Hisoka’s character BGM. Lol, it suits his personality. However, I agree that Netero’s assistant is really like a bean =_=” I wonder what colour the manga’s version of Bean is. hmm..

  4. Soo Killua just became my favorite character in this series; now I’m starting to appreciate how nonchalant this show is about death. During the other episodes the deaths were either a direct result of the test, or essentially Hisoka, who was painted to be a killer anyway. With Killua we certainly got hints that he wasn’t a completely innocent kid, like the way he taunted Tonpa when the spiked drink didn’t have any effect, but he wasn’t portrayed as an overtly evil character that was going to kill anybody so impulsively. I like the fact that he removed himself before losing control in front of Gon, it gives both the character and the show a bit more depth from my point of view, he’s not a cold blooded killer all the time, but at this point he could fit the role of a villain in a lot of other series for that impulse killing. I can’t compare him to the first series, but I think I’d like this version better, I think its easier for the plot to move, and this series i particular when it doesn’t bog itself down in moral dilemmas.

One thing in this episode did bug me though. In the scene where the examiners were having dinner in the ship.. How was the first examiner eating, he has no mouth to speak of lol.

    • Good to see that you like Killua!! =) What about Hisoka? =P Are you warming up to him yet? heh

You are right about the series not holding itself back due to moral dilemmas. =P Which is probably why I have an issue with the “happy” vibe the animation is putting across. Then again, when I think about it, it makes the whole execution even more twisted. Everything sounds happy and good but in actual fact, people are dropping like flies and ruthlessness is second nature. =P

“How was the first examiner eating, he has no mouth to speak of lol.”

Lol! Before I worry about how he eats, I am concern about how he even talks! =D hahaha

  5. I finally gave in to the temptation of rereading the manga series, and I’m starting to appreciate how much truer this remake is to the manga. Of course, the older Killua was cuter and much much much more loveable, but this one isn’t too bad either- it really shows off Killa’s being from the ‘dark side’ and his assassin nature <

So far the people 'dropping dead like flies' have all been minor nameless characters that we see only once. None of them are really important enough to register on my radar for affecting the show's child-friendliness rating. But I'm interested in seeing what will happen once they start killing those characters that we know and like later on in the exam, since that really will be showing 'death'.

By the way, I really really like this Netero! He is so hilarious~ XD

That is probably what most of us are waiting to see. I know that I am waiting to see how the darker side of this series is going to be handled. I am really hoping they don’t sanitize the hell out of it. =P

“By the way, I really really like this Netero! He is so hilarious~ XD”

This version is definitely more “child-like” than the old one and I like it better as well. =D

  6. I don’t think the ’99 version of Killua was more troubled and less “evil”. In the episode of the tower of challenges (or whatever it’s called), we see him do the same thing.

The fact is that Killua was trained as an assassin. He doesn’t have any moral conflicts with killing someone. As for the internal conflict, I think it’s too early in this new series to show it. His conflicts are family conflicts, not a “good/evil” conflict – perhaps it was your own interpretation of the ’99 series that made you think it that way.

That’s true, he did do pretty much the same thing. But we’ll talk about that scene when we get to that in this series. šŸ˜‰ Shan’t spoil stuff for others.

“His conflicts are family conflicts, not a ā€œgood/evilā€ conflict ā€“ perhaps it was your own interpretation of the ā€™99 series that made you think it that way.”

Perhaps… I just saw it as him knowing what right and wrong is and is fighting to do what is right which is against his families’ upbringing of being cold and ruthless. Then again, I guess it can be said that he did stop himself from attacking Netero in the episode. =)
