Mawaru Penguindrum – 19 Review

Episode 19 – My Soulmate

This episode had turned out to be rather sentimental and I was hoping to hear more of the song Grey Wednesday. Sadly, the song wasn’t played. That is definitely my favorite song of the series.

The episode had some rather big revelation regarding Himari and her past and although we are finally getting answers to some of the questions, I feel like there are still plenty of questions left unanswered.

Review

It was shown that Himari was in the Child Broiler during her episode with Sanetoshi so it does make sense that Himari is not part of the family, and so the relationship between Kanba and Himari can no longer be considered incestuous. However, since Shouma was the one who had presented the fruit to Himari, this brings in a whole new complexity. =P Well, despite the fact that the series is coming to an end, this show really does not hold back on its punches.

Takakura Household

Himari is the general focus of this episode with her past and existence coming into question. Although I can understand her whiny attitude, I am still quite annoyed by her character. As it turns out, the person who had presented the fruit of fate to Himari, was Shouma and not Kanba. That really does mess things up. I can’t help but feel sorry for poor Ringo, as it is, she is constantly ignored by Shouma and with this whole new idea that Shouma is Himari’s soul mate, well lets just say that Ringo wouldn’t be the only one left hurt, poor Kanba would suffer as well. This whole revelation leaves us with the question of who Himari is and what Shouma is.

To add to the mix of unanswered questions is the whole issue with Momoka, the Penguindrum, Sanetoshi, the Magic/Fate, the Mission, and the Takakura parents. I am not sure how everything links together but I hope that the script writers do not leave us with any lose ends left hanging around by the end of the series.

The next issue is Kanba. Kanba knew where his parents were yet decided against divulging the information to Tabuki despite his sister’s life being at risk? I am actually starting to wonder if any of the Takakura Household members truly are blood related. Perhaps their real kid had died and these three are all adopted/stolen/rescued children. I mean, how was Kanba able to get into the Natsume household at such a young age and become friends with Masako in the first place? The Takakura family dosen’t seem to be wealthy nor well connected enough for that to happen, then again, Takakura Father is the head of a dodgy men-in-black society so who really knows what power he holds.

Which brings me to the issue of Kanba choosing his parents over Himari. I had honestly thought that he loved Himari more than anything else in the world. But just like all the other characters in this series, the parents of the series have the ultimate hold over the kids and Kanba had chosen to keep his father a secret above protecting his sister’s/lover’s life. Just look at Tabuki and Yuri’s scenes. Yuri wanted had wanted to fill the void in herself left behind by a broken family by creating a family with Tabuki and she had placed that above Momoka in some sense, despite her unrelenting motivation for getting Momoka back. Yuri did say that she had diverted from the original plan of getting things done on her own but had instead seeked the help of Tabuki in hopes of creating a family like environment.

Masako VS Himari

I had enjoyed the conversational scene between Himari and Masako as they were discussing the present Masako had given Kanba. The way in which Masako communicates was always rather fun to watch, but this was definitely one of the funnier scenes for her.

The downside to that situation was that everything got dragged out. Perhaps I was merely impatient to find out the truth behind Himari’s past, but I did feel like the production team did play into that whole scene a bit too much. The whole chasing around in slow motion got boring after awhile and there were way too many scenes that either went by too slowly or were simply unnecessary.

Naturally, things did pick up when the fans had come into play. Those twin fans on the wall of the building beside the Takakura Household did look a lot like the Child Broiler. Perhaps it is the physical location of the Child Broiler? I find it hard to believe that the child broiler is only a surrealistic interpretation of a situation without a real physical location since both Himari and Tabuki did have the same “visual impression” of the situation. Then again, it could simply be like the episode had suggested – merely a similar looking environment that triggered Himari’s memories.

Speaking of memories. I always find it interesting when characters never question their pasts. Wouldn’t you be worried and curious if you are unable to remember a chunk of your life before a certain age? =_=”It is odd how Himari needed Sanetoshi and Masako’s help to get her to question her existence.

What’s with the carrot juice? the rabbits and the human twins were both drinking it.

Sanetoshi

This guy…. is scary.

He obviously knows what is going on yet plays the characters like puppets to achieve his goal. I really can’t wait for when the writers decide to reveal the truth behind Sanetoshi’s actions. He treats everything as a game and sees himself as an activist on the path to getting fate back on the right track by getting the children to finish what their parents had started. Which by the way, is still left unexplained. Argh, all these unanswered questions, I really worry for this series. If the revelations are paced at this rate, we might not be able to get all the answers that we want.

His inability to touch the diary also makes him appear like a judge in a game. It makes you wonder what his role is since this episode pretty much proves that Sanetoshi is a sneaky pig that should not be trusted. He honestly reminds me of a devil with all his manipulative words.

On a side note, I wonder if the two bunnies are meant to represent Himari and Masako. I have no reason for thinking that way except for the fact that I would like an explanation behind the rabbits as well. Hopefully with Shouma being some magical being, we might get an explanation behind the whole Twins Concept in this series and how it relates to everything.

The Blame Game

I had noticed that many of the characters were blaming someone else for whatever reason as to why their life hadn’t turned out the way their wished it might have.

  • Shouma blames his parents for everything. (Does Shouma have amnesia as well?)
  • Maskao blames Himari for Kanba’s actions.
  • Kanba surpisingly doesn’t blame anyone, except perhaps God for Himari’s illness.
  • Tabuki is MIA but blames the Takakura family for death of Momoka.
  • To me, it seems like Himari is blaming her illness from preventing her from achieving what she wants out of life.

As for Yuri, well, she says she blames the Takakura family but her actions seem to speak otherwise. I really did feel for her in this episode as she appeared to be somewhat like a lost and lonely child seeking the warmth of a genuine family.

Who is we?

Overall

It was another solid episode for Mawaru despite some scenes feeling somewhat slow. I love the sentimental mood of the episode followed by the suspense which had left me eager to find out about Himari’s past. It was odd that this series would choose to reveal and answer a secret in one episode as the series loves to tease the audience with speculations. I guess time is finally ticking down for the show.

Episode Rating: 7.5/10

Mawaru Question of the Week:

Which is your favourite character in this series?
(Do not give me weird answers like: “I love the black rabbits! Rabbits are so cute!” If you do, don’t blame me for stalking you like a psycho murderer. =P)

Personally, I love Ringo.

Her character had matured the most through the span of the series. She had started off as a comical psycho stalker and quickly progressed to being infuriating with her unbending will to stick to Momoka’s diary. However, she had quickly redeemed herself through accepting her fate and working hard (in a non scary way) towards winning Shouma’s affections. I can just imagine a heartbroken Rngo by the end of the series lying beside a dead Shouma. T^T

-ra

I have been rewatching Bakemonogatari in hopes of psyching myself up for the Winter Season and Mirai Nikki had me watching Deadman Wonderland again. =P Sigh… I really feel quite sad that Deadman Wonderland had went downhill after episode 7.

  1. My fav character is the Princess of the Crystal. X-D

She gotta be Momoka from the future/alternative time/fate-line.

  2. Another good episode. I’m so lost, but I’ll take back what I had mentioned about Himari being unaffected by her illness, it looks like they really did start to touch on that issue and give her character more depth.

At the ending with the silhouette I was completely ready to say, “oh that has to be Kanba with the magic, which would then make sense if he was really some kind of Magical Momoka clone” but no, they had to throw a curveball and make it Shouma lol. I think I’d go with him or non-psycho Ringo as my favorite characters in this series, if there’s anything I wish the episodes had more of, aside from answers, it would be more interaction with those two characters now that Tabuki’s out of the picture. In the beginning of the series it looked like they were going to be mutually attracted to each other by the end of the whole thing, but now its hard to say.

At around the point where the girls handed out the presents, I noticed the color coordinated bows matching the boy’s hair and I had that immediate thought of if any of them were even related to each other with that trifecta of hair colors the three siblings had. I’m going to call that good foreshadowing on the writers part for firmly planting that thought right before the big reveal.

The bunnies, awesome with the carrot IV’s, but I was under the impression that those creepy twins were also the bunnies. Now that I think about it I’d have to see if there were in any scenes together or not, and if they are, then I missed the fact the those rabbits may be the equivalent of the invisible penguins.

The broiler is one thing that I think needs a concrete explanation before the series ends; with Tabuki it seemed as thought it would have been nice to know, but not at all necessary; now that it links to Himari and therefore whatever the secret behind the family is, we should at least know that that surreal representation stands for. I’d call it an orphanage of sorts, but Tabuki still technically had parents, that “raised” him as far as we know.

So now that Himari vocalized the fact that she’s gonna die, I think she just may die at the end of the series, and then leave Ringo and Shouma to pair off and maybe Kanba and Masako. You touched on the awkward love triangle already, but I think if I had to choose, this is what I’d want to see. err, love Pentagon,
I believe its Masako-> Kanba-> Himari-> <-Ringo with Shouma's choice a bit ambivalent at the moment. He has been ignoring Ringo a bit more now that Himari is starting to take focus, but he doesn't appear to show the same signs of jealousy and affection towards her in the way the Kanba does.

lol, at associating Mirai Nikki and Deadman Wonderland, I agree, both bloody with those wimpy heroes, although I liked Ganta as a character a lot faster than Yuki. If that series had a flaw its that it "clusterf*ked" itself too early and overshot its momentum before tapering out with a less than satisfying open ended conclusion. The OVA may signal hope for a second season tho.

    • “but no, they had to throw a curveball and make it Shouma lol. I think I’d go with him or non-psycho Ringo as my favorite characters in this series,”

Yeap! The minute I saw the silhouette with that tinge of purple, I was like…”no…no…no.. please let it not be Shouma” but oh well, it was.

I was also tempted to say I liked Shouma, but he has recently turned into somewhat of an ass the same time Ringo turned nice. =(

“it looked like they were going to be mutually attracted to each other by the end of the whole thing, but now its hard to say. ”

I still hope that the two do end up together.

“and I had that immediate thought of if any of them were even related to each other with that trifecta of hair colors the three siblings had.”

I hadn’t actually even considered that possibility since all anime characters these days have funky hair color I figured that this was another one of those series.

“The bunnies, awesome with the carrot IV’s, but I was under the impression that those creepy twins were also the bunnies”

I think the twins are meant to represent the bunnies. As for the carrot IV, that was so adorable. I had to pause and take a screen cap of that moment. =P

“The broiler is one thing that I think needs a concrete explanation before the series ends; with Tabuki it seemed as thought it would have been nice to know, but not at all necessary”

Speaking of Tabuki, I wonder if his chracter is done with this series. Was him leaving the end of his character in the show? It would suck if that was all there was to his character since the rest of the characters were developed quite nicely.

“I’d call it an orphanage of sorts, but Tabuki still technically had parents, that “raised” him as far as we know. ”

Well, that would make sense since they were unwanted children.

“So now that Himari vocalized the fact that she’s gonna die, I think she just may die at the end of the series, and then leave Ringo and Shouma to pair off and maybe Kanba and Masako. ”

I would love for Himari to die in a nice manner where the twins won’t be too affected or scarred by her death. Then it would be nice to see some sort of resolution to the relationship (although I doubt that would ever happen… the best I can hope for is less ambiguity with regards to the pairing in the series)

“He has been ignoring Ringo a bit more now that Himari is starting to take focus, but he doesn’t appear to show the same signs of jealousy and affection towards her in the way the Kanba does. ”

It does seem like he treats her as nothing more than a sister. I am really scared they will kill Shouma and have him sacrifice his life for Himari in a similar way Momoka supposedly sacrificed her life.

“I liked Ganta as a character a lot faster than Yuki. ”

Ganta didn’t get on my nerves as much as Yuki. I am still having a hard time warming up to Yuki.

“If that series had a flaw its that it “clusterf*ked” itself too early and overshot its momentum before tapering out with a less than satisfying open ended conclusion. ”

It was annoying when Ganta suddenly became the “choosen one” and the show had to end due to its 12 epsiode “timeframe”. The OVA gave us some back story and hopefully there would be hope for a second season. I am not sure how the show rated during it’s time slot when it had aired though. Any clue?

  3. I love Ringo too but I think she hasn’t parted with her old ways at all… To me she is still considered a scary stalker, she stalks Shouma and wants to win his love.

I love the penguins… they always add comedy and a good laugh in the middle of those serious chats all the characters seem to be having.

Well, she is still a stalker but definitely more “normal”. At least she is not living under their house… I hope.. =P

“I love the penguins… they always add comedy and a good laugh in the middle of those serious chats all the characters seem to be having.”

Yes, those penguins are adorable. I want one! They actually sell the penguins slipper as a set. I am not sure if it is meant to be hinting at something, but the set of slippers is actually Kanba’s penguin paired with Himari’s penguin. Shouma is not part of that set…

  4. Sanetoshi is by far the most interesting character IMO. He’s the one character who sees the big picture, but won’t reveal his motivations. I prefer the ambiguous characters, the ones that may be evil, or not. My take is that he is not evil, but does have his own end to achieve. I’m probably WAY off base in this, but I wonder if he won’t be the one to end up with Himari. Maybe she will decide to join him in that weird library of his after all.

I would like him to end up with Himari. Perhaps they could make it such that when Himari dies Sanetoshi will take her to live in the library.

And I also think that it is quite likely that he is not evil but rather has his own end to achieve, but it is looking like he is pretty ruthless in his manner. =/ Who really knows though. That guy is such an enigma.

  5. I’ve been waiting for your review ever since i watched this ep. Ikuhara is a TROLL! Out of all the male characters in the series, Shouma is the one that i least expected to be Himari’s fated one. I was mindfckd by this ep. Well, not as hard as the episode with Yuri being “Yuri” but the revelations were so… overwhelming. They really have to pick Shouma… @_@ Although, things got a lot more interesting, it also made things a lot more complicated than it is in the present. Also, the fact that Kanba kept in touch with his parents was just mindblowing. Maybe, he just kept in touch with his parents but he really didn’t know where they were that’s why when Tabuki asked him the question, he said he didn’t know. hahaha.

This episode made me want to know what’s going on in the mawaru universe since ikuhara has been such an amazing Troll, i’ve been so excited that i’ve been wishing it to be Friday already. GAH. Mawaru and Ikuhara why so amazing?

    • Forgot to answer your question, My favorite character ever since Mawaru started was Shouma. 🙂 Although, he has his emo moments, I still find him adorable. 😀 Next , would be Ringo. The development of her character was just so wonderfully done. She really did mature from being a crazy stalker to a very sweet girl. I hope the new revelation of Shouma being Himari’s fated one wouldn’t ruin the development of Ringo-Shouma. It’s not part of your question but i just have to rant about how i hate Himari’s character. hahaha.

Same. =P I had not expected it and you can see that I was wishing that wasn’t the case. I would really want to see how they plan on playing this out.

“Maybe, he just kept in touch with his parents but he really didn’t know where they were that’s why when Tabuki asked him the question, he said he didn’t know. ”

That would be possible. But those few people are all so shady. It suddenly feels like Kanba and the Takakura parents are manipulating Shouma and Himari.

“GAH. Mawaru and Ikuhara why so amazing?”

I wonder how much longer we would have to wait to see Ikuhara’s next anime. T^T Revolutionary Girl Utena was such a long time ago. I really don’t know what to do once the show is over. =/

“It’s not part of your question but i just have to rant about how i hate Himari’s character. hahaha.”

LOL! No worries. Rant away. =P

“My favorite character ever since Mawaru started was Shouma. 🙂 Although, he has his emo moments, I still find him adorable”

I wonder about Shouma character since we have this new development. How much of his personality is his “real” personality and how much of it is him hiding the truth or him forgetting who he really is? It would be interesting to see what he is like since he is a magical being of sorts. =P

    • I think you mean Yosuga no Sora, but that one and this are really far apart. That was essentially a dialogue heavy hentai with more plot than normal. It wasn’t hardcore, but it was pretty graphic, and there was no question of if the sex was implied between the guy and any of the girls, it happened and we saw it, and then got a random big boobed maid recap at the end of each episode.
Also I’m not sure if Himari counts as Himari with the penguin hat on.

        Lol.. what?

Himari is Princess Dominatrix Himari! Lol.
I mean, she did seem to love to be queen bee. =P

        Like

      • lol, Dominatrix Himari sounds accurate if she didn’t have a name already for per penguin power up.
In Yosuga the basic plot was the twins, a boy and girl, move out to the country where they used to live, their parents out out of the picture so its just the two of them at this point in an isolate village. He goes to school first, and it follows that S.S. Amagami pattern where he has a route play out with one girl and then it does a reset to another girl.

Here’s my synopsis the entire show*Spoilers*
The first two girls were half sisters, and there was drama over one of them being illegitimate and the other being overly pressured to exceed at music or something. The next girl was essentially a childhood friend that actually had sex with him (read, threw him down and rode him) while they were younger, because she was distressed over her parents divorce or something along those lines and vented on him, but as a scared immature kid he repressed it. The scenario finishes with him acknowledging what happened and then the sex continuing from there. The last scenario is with the twin sister, and it actually plays off the previous scene with the childhood friend, the sister becomes aware of the sexual relationship, gets jealous, things happen and then somehow they end up in bed together, but unlike Mawaru, there was nothing implying that they weren’t blood related by the end of it. The sister gets increasingly clingy, at this point she’s able to go to school as well, and people start to notice. At one point the childhood friend walks in on them doing it doggy-style in front of the door, and sh*t hits the fan. In the end it resolves with the twins moving away together to a place where nobody would know that they are related at all. And then at the end of each episode ,a maid narrates a short of her love life with the main character, which doesn’t actually factor into the main plot but it does provide the show with an excuse to show her breasts.
        *end of very long spoiler*

  7. Oh my stars, I finally watched the latest episode and was so spazzed by the final twist that I had to rush over here ASAP. Because even if I don’t comment, this blog has always been my go-to reference for this show. Shouma… just… really? Is he a reincarnation of Momoka? Were they partners in crime? Did his rescuing of Himari happen before, during, or after Tabuki’s rescue?

Personally, I think the Child Broiler is set in an alternate time line, or “line of fate,” and that Momoka would experiment hoping around theses lines. Maybe she knew a Tabuki from her line of fate and he died, so she got our Tabuki from the Child Broiler. Maybe she was never part of Yuri’s world, but travelled there specifically to save Yuri for her own purposes. Or maybe I could just be completely misunderstanding this “line of fate” concept. I really don’t know what to think at this point.

To answer your question, I’d have to say the Shouma has always been one of my favorite characters. He’s just really sweet, and I’m attracted to his nurturing personality. However, I feel torn between cheering for him and being really frustrated by his self defeating actions/attitude throughout the series. As I think you’ve mentioned before, all the other’s penguins seem to be synced and helpful to their partners, while Shouma’s is always ready to sabotage whatever efforts he’s making to get stuff done, if Shouma isn’t doing that to himself already.

I also love the girls Ringo and Himari together. Idk, I just always thought their interactions were cute. Also, i was kind of biased towards them just because a lot of other fans seemed to hate them so much 😛

I shall be a tyrant and demand comments. 😉 j/k. Glad to see that you are commenting.

“Did his rescuing of Himari happen before, during, or after Tabuki’s rescue?”

Due to Himari’s age, it has to be after Tabuki’s rescue. =)

Hmm.. the alternate reality is a pretty interesting notion.

“He’s just really sweet, and I’m attracted to his nurturing personality. ”

He is sweet, I loved the arc with him following and looking after Ringo… even if it was due to the diary and Himari.

Ahem.. am I detecting some sadism? Lol. XD j/k

So far i’ve loved Ringo and her epic character development. i was kinda proud of her ^_^ but i’ve noticed that she acts like a balance- when everybody else seemed normal, she was an overly disturbing psycho stalker who would rape to fulfill what was written in momoka’s diary, and when everyone went haywire she became the most normal character of them all xD
