Mirai Nikki – 07 Impression

Episode 07 – Dial Tone

Surprise!

I know that I said I might review it later in the week, but I simply could not help myself.

Damn, this was another good episode of Mirai Nikki.

Impression

Time for me to get the excitement out of my system and rant to the few of you who are still reading my “impressions”. =D

First we have Rei. His diary is really quite terrible; being only able to predict 3 times a day is really quite a pity. I mean, I feel like that boy was somewhat cheated by receiving such a limited diary. Then again, all the diaries have their own individual limits.

Although Rei is a kid, I really do feel that his psychotic personality scares me more than Yuno. If ghosts shows are anything to go by, children are always scarier than adults. The episode does enough in the flashback to allow us to see why the boy is so twisted and I would assume that his behaviour is really just his warped view on loneliness and the lack of companionship.

Lesson to be learned? An abusive household, coupled with child neglect would lead to a psychotic killer. Irregardless of age. =P

What I found weird about Rei’s character was his level of intelligence. The boy is only a kid and he seems to posses a pretty good analytical mind. That could just be his character trait but I really wished that that aspect was developed a bit more since it was never shown/told if Rei was a genius of sorts before the diary/game had came into play.Personally, I don’t know shit-all about electricity and voltage except for the fact that you can get electrocuted. =P Wires and water is a big no no. (or so I’m made to believe. =P)

On a side note, I do like the kiddish BGM played during the opening scene with Rei in the toilet. It really brings out his lack of child-like qualities by contrasting it with his actions in that scene. It was pretty much as good as the writers screaming out “This guy is the opposite of what a child is meant to be!” I really like the execution of that.

I had also loved the mind games played between Yuno and Rei. It was really interesting to see Yuno outsmart Rei and failing to do so. It goes to show that despite Yuno’s intelligence, Yuki would lead to her downfall. (As Rei had stated).

Perhaps I am the only one, but I did feel like Yuno’s character was more mature in this episode as compared to the other episodes. Instead of going pure psychotic on us as per usual, she had held back and was actually pretty normal. I really loved the moment when she had placed herself in Rei’s mindset. It reminded me of this television series called ‘The Pretender’. How many of you have seen it? I used to love watching it and seeing the genius main character turn into a different person each week. (ra suddenly feels like watching The Pretender… *goes and digs up dvds*)

Despite how much I loved the episode, there were a few inconsistencies.

Why did Yuno let her guard down around Rei in the bath scene despite showing us that she had suspected Rei to be up to no good? I mean, it does not make sense. Does she really have a split personality disorder?

Then we have the gas. Yuno broke one window to let the gas out. I was shocked that she hadn’t simply broken every window in the rooms she had visited just in case she needed to clear the air. There was still poison in the air after all. And with one serum, what would she do if she had gotten infected? Then we have Yuki kissing her. Can’t the virus be spread that way? What about the fact that when Yuno had fallen down the stairs, did she get infected by the virus then since she wasn’t covering her mouth? =/ (I know I have a bunch of questions. =P)

One last thing, the water was flowing down the stairs rather slowly, why did Yuno just stand in the puddle looking around instead of jumping off the stairs over the railing? I understand that time is of the essence, but getting electrocuted isn’t really going to help and a jump from half a story shouldn’t hurt her. Yuki had to come to her rescue because of that.

The kiss of life – Instant rejuvenation. =P Seems like something out of a fairy tale.

Now onto Yuki. He is really getting good at handling Yuno, I have to praise the boy for being able to deal with Yuno so calmly in this episode. With the introduction of a kid in the show, it seems like our main characters are forced to mature. =P

The funny moment of the episode for me would have to be when Yuki was busy searching for the diary and Yuno simply walks up and grabs a knife. Lol.

I actually laughed out loud at that part. You have to love the girl’s disregard for life. 😉

Oh, one more thing that I had remembered. Why did Minene help Yuki by warning him about Yuno? She is also in the game and wouldn’t it be easier for her to finish off the two of them whilst they are down? By simply deciding not to actively save Yuki would have been some sort of progress for her as well. =/ At the very least, that scene eludes to the fact that Yuno might be Yuki’s biggest obstacle in the not-so-distant future.

Overall, it was definitely a highly entertaining episode. The suspense was killing me and I loved the lack of cliff hangers. =D The mind battle between Yuno and Rei was quick and efficient and none of the characters had gotten on my nerves, not even Yuki. With one more player out of the game, the numbers are getting smaller. I can’t wait to see what happens next! \(^-^)/ Hopefully, it would be even more mind games because I do enjoy them a bit more than the out-of-control psychotic Yuno.

Episode Rating: 8.5/10 – What’s there to say. I really enjoyed it and it had paced itself really nicely and the execution in creating a convincing atmosphere was well done too.

Can you image if you diary had broken down and that was all it had told you about your future? =P

Mirai Nikki Question of the Week:

What would you want your diary to do and what limit would your diary have? Also, what form would your diary take?

Seeing as to how I use my computer so much and am pretty much attached to it. My diary would have to be my laptop, and if not, then it would be my handphone. (But we all know that is boring. Then again, a giant laptop would mean a bigger target. =P)

As for what edge my diary would give me? Well, I would like a diary to be a protection diary – by mapping out my path to safety. Something like Minene’s escape diary, but perhaps it would take care in not costing me a limb or two along the way. =P

As for the restraints of the dairy? Well, it would simply be able to map out my personal route to safety and not a route for others. (I know, what a big sacrifice that is right? =P But hey, don’t blame me for being selfish with my wish. When everyone is out to kill you, it is every man for himself, or herself. =P)

  1. I want a diary that describes my own situation. Just like Yuno’s, only it tells about myself.
But of course, never joining this stupid game is actually the best choice. What’s the guarantee that the long nose guy would grant his position to the winner? I can’t help but to think he’s just toying with them. [I dropped the manga, for reminder]

    Isn’t 8.5 a bit too high of a score?
Logic fails of this week: [you have mentioned most of them though :-)]
-Yuno is being too careless in the bath. I would have kicked the kid out. [she was wary enough to block the scissors with pillow last week]
-When did the kid tape the windows, without our two protagonist noticing?
-Why didn’t Yuno break all the windows and tried to open all door and windows for air circulation?
-The poison gas stays too long and spreads out too much considering it came out from a small envelope. [there’s no scene of Rei renewing the gases]
-Jumping off from stair’s halfway isn’t hard? I did it a lot as a kid.

    • Aye, I checked the manga right after the show, and it has Rei bouncing or dragging a bag that seems to emit the poison gas everywhere. It was in the manila envelope along with his Picture Diary. Also, in the manga, Yuno opened a bunch of windows (which weren’t taped down) to let out most of the initial poison gas.

For some reason the anime creators didn’t incorporate that.

My diary would be a highly detailed book of philosophy. The Philosophical Diary. The opposite of Yukiteru’s passive recording of events — it would be a comprehensive analysis of events and behavior. 🙂

That actually sounds cool. But then… since it is comprehensive, wouldn’t that mean a lot of text to read? Most of the diaries have a 1 sentence thing going for them.

Remember, the diaries are set to 90 days in advance. 😀

LOL. That’s a lot of shit to read. =P I think it might make you psycho to read a character analysis of people like Yuno.. =P Then again, it might prove to be rather entertaining. Hmmm… *ponders*

=P I was thinking the same way too… but here is the reason why I rated it so high. After feeling so tired and lethargic the whole day, this episode actually made me energetic. I had a lot of fun watching it. But then again perhaps I had lowered my standards after having seen Persona 4 earlier that night. =P

  2. If you read the Mirai Nikki manga, you would know why Minene helped Yuki. And for the question, I would like to have a diary much like Yuno and Yuki’s put together, but instead it would tell what happens to me and not the person I stalked. It would probably be in the form of either a cell phone or a small laptop, but I think a cell phone is better. Light weight.

Well, I shall wait for that to unveil in the series then. 😉

What about a time limit? =P How far in the future would it be able to predict?

      • Actually, SkyyDevv is not quite precise. She/He means the Mirai Nikki Paradox manga, which focuses on Minene’s story, both prior and concurrent to the main manga. I suggest you read up to the 5th chapter because some (snippets, really) of it is already incorporated in the anime, and I doubt the anime will explain how Fifth got his equipment so easily in the next few episodes. The anime is basically compressing 59 chapters into 26 episodes, and in Episode 7, they’ve finished up to only 13 chapters. 😦

Well… they are only slightly slower in their pacing as compared to series like HxH. =P Despite the loopholes, I do like the lack of dragged out moments. Everything happens quickly and that’s good for me since the story itself might not be “complex/deep/heavy” enough to withstand a slower pace. =D

Psychic Diary XD I would want one! (^-^)/

But, is that still considered a future diary?

      • “well, i figured future thoughts was implied”

Well, future thoughts… that might be really interesting to see. However, it might pose an issue since people think a lot without actually doing things. So you might get a lot of false information despite the insight to the person’s character.

      • exactly…that way it’s not overpowered
plus, people think a lot of things, so you’re never going to get all of them…you have to take what you see and use your brain to figure it all out

  4. Good episode, 7 episodes and I’m still kinda surprised at how the character develop, there is just no end to Yuno’s craziness; from swinging the hammer, to pulling out a knife as the simplest solution, to whatever that meditation thing she did was.

As for my diary I think I’d want something Ironic like a hindsight diary on my ipod touch. basically I’d have notes that would say something like, “you would’ve lived if you had made that left turn at Albuquerque” I think that’s almost like its own limit because the future in the diary would always be changing if I do the opposite of the negative outcome in the diary.

The plot holes everyone mentioned I saw too, my real question was where a kid even got access to poison gas and gas masks, and when did he get it to the house, but I think I’m being nitpicky.

Didn’t you know? It is normal to have those kind of things in your backpack. I am sure I have some in my bag as well. XD Lol. j/k. You are right about it though, then again, he could have made a homemade gas thingy or stole the chemicals from the hospital when he was in it in episode 6. =)

  5. It wasnt actually poison gas…
It was really a cyanide gas..
Which could kill you in less than 5-15 mins in a cloud of cyanide gas!
