Episode 09 – Careful x of x Prisoners

The battle continues with Gon and Kurapica stepping up to the plate this week.

At this rate, this segment of the tower would be over by the next episode with Killua and Leorio being the only ones left to battle.

Review

This episode covers another 2 chapters of the manga (17 and 18) and covers 1 episode of the 99 series (14).

I really don’t think that I have too much to talk about in this episode. The episode was as usual – true to the original manga and had played out in the way that I would have expected it to be – many panning scenes and long silences.

The Pacing

What I would like to highlight as the best part of the episode for me would be the scene where Kurapica gets riled up. The amount of focus placed on the change in his breathing and the shivers in his arm really made it visually more impactful and definitely attracts the audience’s attention more than the execution of the other scenes. I would love if the same amount of detail in the animation was done for the rest of the scenes as well. It is really quite sad that most of the time, the animators rely on lazy animation techniques by settling for panning still shots.

If you were to read that couple of chapters in the manga, one would realise that the manga progresses at a pretty fast rate with each panel progressing the plot further instead of dragging things out. This episode did what the ’99 version had done, which was to slow things down to fit into an episode and to play the tension up. What had happened for me was that the dialogue became very obvious and I was once again getting partially bored of all the visually boring framing of the scenes. I don’t think that atmosphere is simply build by dragging out an important scenes. If you were to compare the pacing of a series such as Fate/Zero to this, the amount of content covered in an episode is more than what was covered in this episode. I have no clue why the story is continuously cut off at the “perfectly timed” (and convenient) parts instead of pacing the episode faster and having the episode end at a cliffhanger moment.

This well rounded single episodes are starting to form a trend in this series.

The Smurfs

Majitani is blue!

What is with the colour of these characters? They are still human right? I was actually hoping that the shock Leorio had shown was due to the colour of Majitani and not due to his muscles. =P

During that scene, Majitani’s laughter was played out as we are shown his inner thoughts. Did you guys feel that it was a tad weird how much the guy had to laugh in order to cover the length of his thoughts? =P I found that pretty comical. but probably not for the right reasons.

This scene is the first time we are shown a detailed portrayal of Kurapica’s reaction to the Phantom Troupe and how they are branded.

What this scene made me question was how some characters can appear so strong despite their scrawny frame (Kurapica). I was shocked when Kurapica had lift Majitani up in the air using one hand. =P

I had really enjoyed the insight to Kurapica’s nature and his hatred for the Troupe with him stating that he gets angry at the sight of any form of spiders. That was a nicely executed joke that wasn’t over-the-top in the same way last week had played out the “Dragon Ball Z” moment with Tompa.

The Extras

[Section removed]

My bad, seemed to have not noticed that part in the manga.

Thanks to Glossa Bingo for pointing it out.

Overall

Well, it was another true-to-manga week for HxH and despite Gon’s childish personality having shined through in this episode, Kurapica’s agitation had brought some of the darkness back into the series. I can’t wait to see more of Gon being less like an annoying brat and more like a sociopath. =P (Hey, what else are you meant to call a guy who seems pretty unaffected by death)

Episode Rating: 7/10 – 2011 version wins this week.

Hunter x Hunter Question of the Week:

It’s time to test your memory and hearing!

I had thought that this sound effect in this episode had sounded odd and inaccurate. Can you guess what this is meant to be?

I will post the answer up in a couple of days. So start guessing away! =)

Here is the answer!

=P It is when the Gon places the candles down on the ground. That is the sound of the candles coming into contact with the floor.

Honestly… That sounds way too solid for candles. Then again, I don’t go around playing with candles all day long so I could have a very twisted impression of how a candle sounds like in contact with the floor. (I feel that it should have been more muted. =/)

So how many of you got it right?

See you next episode!

  1. Actually, the scene where it’s stated that Majitani isn’t dead actually isn’t filler–it’s in the manga too. But instead of Bendot stating so, the next prisoner does so. It’s in chapter 19.

  2. As per my guinea pig requirements lol

I agree the fight scenes seemed more draggy than tension building, and the best part was that minute when Kurapica lost control, I definitely like that the characters have dark sides, I think it makes any series more interesting by virtue of it just being there. Who didn’t watch Kenshin to get a glimpse of “Battosai the Manslayer,” but I digress. My favorite part of the episode was probably Killua’s reaction to Kurapica beating down his opponent in such a rage, that simple whistle while everyone else is awestruck made him seem so much cooler by comparison.

From a newcomers perspective, both fights pretty much played out the way I expected; there was no way the candles were going to burn for hours, it just wouldn’t be interesting, and they spent too much time giving blue guy an inner monologue about his plan for there to be any real battle. Even at the point where Kurapica beat the crap out of him and listed off his rules, i sorta figured that he was going to reveal that he knew the spider tattoo wasn’t genuine, despite having just beat the guy down. Also, I think using the spider tattoo as a trigger is pretty cool, but then spiders in general as a trigger made it over the top; i’m glad they did make that cute joke at it.

Still looking forward to Killua’s fight, judging by what I know of the characters so far, Leorio would have to be the second loss, and I would have said that no matter which round he fought in, but with only two left, and his being next, I highly doubt they wouldn’t give all the main characters a fight scene.

If I had to guess what that sound is, I’d say it was either from when the candles were lit or when the rocks where smashed by the steel arm, I don’t remember hearing the noise, but I think those would be my best choices.

Lol! Yes! Guinea pig! If that doesn’t satisfy you, I can think up of an alternate title… perhaps ‘Test Subject A’ would be suitable? =D

“there was no way the candles were going to burn for hours, it just wouldn’t be interesting,”

Well, that scene gave them the most “room” to waste time since all they did was waiting for the candles to burn out. Thank god they decided not to drag it out for too long. =D

“I agree the fight scenes seemed more draggy than tension building, and the best part was that minute when Kurapica lost control, I definitely like that the characters have dark sides, I think it makes any series more interesting by virtue of it just being there.”

Well, the good thing about the series is how the characters develop and how most of them have “darker” sides to their personalities (if not darker tones in the atmosphere to make things more interesting). But am glad that I wasn’t the only one that felt that it was slow since as I had mentioned previously, it is hard to really judge if things are slow when you know what to expect.

“If I had to guess what that sound is, I’d say it was either from when the candles were lit or when the rocks where smashed by the steel arm, I don’t remember hearing the noise, but I think those would be my best choices.”

      Close…. quite close… =P
I couldn’t get the sound out of my head because it sounded so wrong for such an action. =P

  3. really stupid that they dont have anything new to present to viewers, that they go and remake a lousy series. pure copy of FMA. dont tell me they will go and remake sailormoon now? this show is too weak, too much of one piece element.

    Like

    • Wouldn’t a remake of Sailor Moon be a good thing? The anime, though a good shojo series, was really different from the manga.

And this show does have new things to present to viewers–we just haven’t gotten to them yet. Keep in mind that Hunter x Hunter has been off the air for a decade, with 30 episodes of the series having never aired on TV due to being released in an OVA format. You can’t expect for them to pick up where they left off–especially when the old version created some plot inconsistencies that would have been difficult to write out of.

Well, you are right that there are too many remakes happening these days, but I guess it is always a safe bet for companies when the industry is suffering. =/

      Like

      • yes, “industry is suffering.” so much that they also went and do MARVEL anime.anime these days are too pitiful to watch. i was hoping for something new this season,
but looking at the upcoming anime list. again it was so disappointing.

  4. You’re right, I was sighing less this chapter and really liked the fact Kurapika’s warning had no bgm, it was like everything just stopped so we could hear what he had to say.
But… where’re his earrings? I saw a bare ear and blinked. I kind of liked those earrings.
And I also liked we had a glimpse of the Genei Ryodan, the looked badass.

Yes, of course I remember you. How could I forget such a humorous past time? =P
(Why don’t you put in a nick name so you won’t be anonymous? Would be easier to know who you are. =) )

Anyway, back to your question, I had started up the site a few years ago but had stopped blogging when life got in the way. Life settled down and I started blogging again last season.

As for how I met M0rg0th?

Well, you can thank Blood-C for that. =P

M0rg0th would comment every episode with his own review on the episode and I thought that his comments were funny and that his style was pretty different from mine. We got to chatting and now he is a part of the blog. (Although he is MIA due him maxing out his internet)

And I don’t regret starting the blog since I get to chat w great people like you guys. =D

it appeared twice since it has a flashback at the later parts : D

  9. Well, this was a good comeback from last week’s episode. although, this was also an episode of panning just like last episode, they did make use of the panning effect for tension build up which was good especially for Kurapica’s fight. I kind of preferred that style more on kurapica’s fight compared to Gon’s. I didn’t find this episode slow even though i had watched the 99’s series and i know what will happen, maybe because the pacing was similar to the 99’s series that i didn’t noticed the pacing, but nonetheless, i think for the Kurapica’s fight the 11′ series tension build up was a little better compared to the 99’s series. Other than that the episode was good. By the way, i agree with you that the sound for the candle was a little to solid, it sounded like a rock. hahah. 😛
